Job Description

The Research Consultant – Geographic Information Systems (GIS); will be responsible for providing faculty with direct consulting, user support, assistance, and/or guidance for leveraging GIS to support research projects, academic programs, and grants. This role will also structure and execute analysis of data directly related to research efforts in a variety of disciplines. This role will be responsible for providing this support throughout the grant lifecycle, providing faculty with the material support for applications with different federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health. The Research Consultant (GIS) will also play a role in post-award support activities. In addition, this role will provide expertise and support in the use of GIS for grant applications, computational projects and applications with large and small datasets.  The Research Consultant (GIS) will provide support and guidance at all stages of the research process with respect to GIS and its application to research or academic imperatives.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Develop GIS-related on-line documentation and training materials. Conduct tutorials and workshops and deliver lectures for the entire research community to include faculty and graduate student consultants on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the use of related software.  Ensure that appropriate departments are aware of the GIS support resources provided by Research Services. Represent the Department of Information Technology Services to other University areas to effectively communicate the availability of research support resources to the research community.  Additionally, Monitor trends in GIS methods and software to ensure that consulting services are aligned with researchers’ needs and current tools and methodologies.

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:

Two Levels; Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:
Research Consultant - GIS: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a research environment providing advanced GIS/analytical consultation - Salary from  from 85k to 95k
Senior Research Consultant - GIS: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a research environment providing advanced GIS/analytical consultation - Salary 95k to 110k

 



Requirements

- Master’s/Ph.D. in a related area
- Expertise with ArcGIS, QGIs, Google Earth or similar tools
- 3 years experience in an academic setting (some of which is teaching experience)
- Proficiency in a programming language such as Python
- Ability to extract and work with data from a variety of sources (e.g., XML, database, Web)
- Work with investigators on data collection (ensure all processes for data collection/entry meet good practices, cleaning, storage), data analysis, and presentation.
- Strong public presentation and interpersonal skills.
