Job Description

The Boston College Libraries (BCL) seek a highly collaborative (Sr.) Research Librarian/Bibliographer to provide subject expertise and innovation for the Theology and Ministry Library (TML), serving the University’s School of Theology and Ministry (STM) as well as the St. John’s Seminary (SJS). Successful candidates will have a demonstrated record of implementing strategies that enhance teaching, learning, research, and collections in all formats. The STM is devoted to students’ holistic formation – their academic success, practical development in ministerial work, and the cultivation of their faith, spiritual expression, and theological voice. STM faculty are recognized for their expertise in theological matters and for their leadership and scholarship in service to the Church and world. Together with the 31-member faculty in Boston College's Theology Department, the STM faculty make up the largest faculty at a Catholic theological school in North America.The (Sr.) Research Librarian/Bibliographer is primarily responsible for the provision of research and instruction services at the TML.  As a bibliographer, s/he selects materials and maintains the overall quality and content of the TML collection.  Additionally, s/he creates and maintains guides to research resources, supervises the Reference and Collection Development Assistant, serves on pertinent committees and task forces, and collaborates with others to create guidelines, set goals, and evaluate library services.

The (Sr.) Research Librarian/Bibliographer reports to the Head Librarian of the Theology and Ministry Library and is primarily responsible for the provision of research and instruction services at the Theology and Ministry Library.  In addition, he/she selects materials and maintains the overall quality and content of the Theology and Ministry library collection.


 •   Provides reference and research assistance in person, by telephone or online.

•    Designs and provides instruction in the effective use of library resources for theological research.

•    Selects materials and maintains the Theology and Ministry Library collections.

•    Serves as a liaison with faculty to develop collections and to heighten awareness of research tools, resources and digital technologies

•   Creates and maintains guides to library and Internet resources.

•   Supervises the Reference and Collection Development Assistant.

•   Works with the Head Librarian to evaluate and set goals and objectives for library services.

•   In consultation with the Head Librarian, establishes guidelines for maintaining the collection.

•  Serves on pertinent Libraries-wide committees and task forces.


The Research Librarian/Bibliographer role requires at least two years of directly related experience. 

The Senior Research Librarian/Bibliographer role requires a minimum of five years of directly
related experience.

This position requires an ALA-accredited MLS

A graduate degree in theology or related field of study and previous project and personnel
management experience are preferred. 

Candidates must have strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
proven teaching skills; the ability to work independently as well as part of a team; flexibility and ability to adapt to a changing environment; demonstrated problem solving skills; proficiency in the use of online resources and research databases; and general familiarity and facility with current library-related

Title and Salary TBD:

Non-Senior Level:  Hiring Range $60,250 - $68,150 – min 2 years experience

Senior Level:  Hiring Range $60, 250 - $75,250 – min 5 years directly related exp
